Membrane Nitrogen Generation For Controlled Atmosphere (CA) Applications

November 21, 2024

GENERON®  has provided two 6158CP-100 Industrial Nitrogen Generator Triton cabinets to meet specific purity requirements within a controlled atmosphere building for an agricultural application. This unit has been sold to a fruit farming company in Washington to help regulate the atmosphere around their fruit storage using nitrogen.

Nitrogen is widely used in controlled atmosphere (CA) applications across numerous industries. Nitrogen’s inert characteristics make it essential for processes that demand lower oxygen levels to preserve product quality, prevent oxidation, or establish specific environmental conditions. The primary purposes include prolonging shelf life, preserving freshness, and preventing spoilage. By controlling the atmosphere through the use of nitrogen generation to reduce oxygen in the farming company’s storage chambers, they are able to slow respiration rates and delay the ripening process until the fruit is sold and shipped to grocers.

The Triton 6158CP-100 nitrogen generator features a compact design that allows for easy installation and maintenance at these fruit storage chambers. An automatic purity control valve can also be added in place of the manual purity control valve. This can be a convenient way to change purity levels in the instance of wanting to quickly flood the space with 95% nitrogen, then adjust the purity to a higher percentage level.

Leveraging Generon’s advanced membrane technology, the illustrated system is engineered to generate nitrogen with a purity level of 95% at a flow rate of 55 SCFM. While these parameters are tailored for a specific application, the system is capable of achieving purities of 99.5% or higher.
